Bernard Lee Fook Loy won and Lee Chye Ewe won the Tawau Toastmasters Club Speech Contests which was held on 10th January 2011.

Dear Fellow Toastmasters,

Festive seasons is still in the mood that more than half of the members were absent with apologies from the training meeting held on 27th Dec. There were 12 of us included 2 members from Lahad Datu TMC - TM Yong Tze Vun and David Chong ACS whom is also a very supportive Tawau TMC member.

Our meeting started a little late because the venue was not opened for us that evening. My apologies for forgetting about SAA's job to inform Eddie of our meeting as SAA Vera Yap ACG, CL is on holiday.

Meeting was called to ordered at 7.30 pm by TM Vincent Chong and was followed an invocation by Chartered President, Patricia Chai ATM-B.

Agnes Tamin, Toastmaster of the Evening for the 1st time was not dry at all. She was steady, witty and full of enthusiasm. May I have the honor to announce that she will be one of Tawau TMC's promising stars of tomorrow.

Immediate Past President Lynda Lee ACB, CL took a double role as Ah Counter and Grammarian. APPRECIATE was thoughtfully introduced by Lynda Lee ACB,CL as word of the evening to suit the theme "THANKSGIVING".

Our seasoned Toastmaster, Lee Chye Ewe DTM conducted the Table Topics session. He posted personal topics so every one felt free and easy to participate in the session.

Table Topics Evaluator, Grace Yong ACG has found out an idea that she would not evaluate Table Topics Master but instead she evaluated how well the participants responded to the topics.

There were 4 manual speakers:
1. Vincent Chong - CC 4 (The White Ball) evaluated by David Chong ACS
2. Gorgonia Koh - CC 9 (My happiest month of the year) evaluated by Grace Yong ACG
3. Liew Hon Min - CC 10 ( Good Decision) evaluated by Lee Chye Ewe DTM
4. Hj Yalah Munur - ACG 8 ( A chapter in my marriage life) evaluated by Betty Hiew CC

Me, the general evaluator would like to thank all role players for the evening. For without you all, the meeting would not be successfully held.

My summary of the meeting was that TME was the soul, Table Topics Master was the heart, Manual Speeches were the spices and essence and Evaluators were the teachers, advisors and motivators. All these combined to make a fantastic meeting.

Hi Fellow Toastmasters,

HO - HO - HO...........Jingling-A-Jingling...........Christmas is in the air!!! Tawau Toastmasters Club celebrated Christmas 12 days earlier.

Last night's (13th Dec 2011) training meeting was deservingly hailed as the best in the scene of Tawau Toastmasters Club meeting - 14 members were outnumbered by 16 guests.

First and foremost, I would like to thank Lee Chye Ewe DTM,TM Donysiew Julian, Eleanor Pang ACG and Rosslin Rosen ACB, CL for the great effort in adorning the meeting hall with X'mas decorations.

Meeting was called to order at 7.25 pm by TM Donysiew Julian and followed by an invocation by TM Agnes Tamin who delivered a beautiful thought of the evening - DON'T BE AFRAID.

Past President Roselind Gan ATM-S, CL graciously took up the role of Toastmaster of the Evening. She lead us in singing "Jingle Bells" at the first part of warming-up session and for the 2nd part was that we walked around to shake hands and to greet each other " Merry X'mas".

Immediate Past President Lynda Lee ACB, CL conducted a wonderful Table Topics session. It was good that she managed to get 9 members and 2 guests ( Shirley Yong & Julia Lee) to participate in the Table Topics. During Table Topics Evaluation, she was praised by Lee Chye Ewe, DTM for being a confident Table Topics Master who has good eye contact with members and guests.

Virgin Timer, TM Laura did a good job in recording the time. She is a strict Timer. Well done, Laura. That's what a Timer should be.

AH Counter Bernard Lee ATM-B reported that everybody including himself spoke well. He even congratulated himself for no AHs and UMs. I think I have one "AH" and one "UM" during Table Topics session.......Shhhhh.........Bernard didn't catch me....Yayyyyy!!!!!!!

TM Vincent Chong as Humor Master shared a few hilarious X'rated jokes which had infused our mind with wild imagination.

General Evaluator Vera Yap ACG, CL complimented TME Roselind Gan ATM-S, CL for a flawless role. She has also related the manual speeches as inspiring, motivating, informative and emotional. To sum up her general remarks of the meeting, she praised speech evaluators
for giving constructive evaluations with helpful tips for improvement.

Awards, appreciation, recognition and acknowledges always play a very important part of Toastmasters training whereby members are motivated and encourage to improve, even helping others to improve.

Tawau Toastmasters Club - Select Distinguished Club 2010/2011

Tawau Toastmasters Club was recognised during The Magical Bali Convention held in Bali from 11th to 13th November 2011.

The achieved Select Distinguished Club status during Immediate Past President Lynda Lee's term (2010-2011). President Datin Betty Hiew and other club members who attended the convention were on stage to receive the Award on behalf of Lynda from Immediate Past District 87 Governor Mohd Ariff Azahari, DTM.

Also on stage to received awards and recognition was our sister club from Sandakan, Sandakan Toastmasters Club. However the club's various achievements were not properly highlighted. The awards they received were:

Dear Fellow Toastmasters,

When I walked in the meeting hall at 6.55 pm, the setting of the hall instantly gave me a relaxed feeling. The hall was decorated with palm leaves laid on tables, creepers hanging on the lectern, straw hats adorning the wall, green plants and flowers. Hawaiian songs and Caribbean music added a touch to the tropical feel with imagination of the cool breeze......Mmmmm...........Aloha!

Our talented decorator, Grace Yong ACG indeed has a passion for interior decoration.

Members arrived with all kinds of tropical attires colorfully. Our TME, Vera Yap ACG, CL was in a sexy and colorful pareo whereas TM Dr Renuka came all the way from Lahad Datu in a loose red floral outfit
complemented with a hat and a pair of sunglasses. TM Dr Renuka walked away with best dressed award from TME.

Meeting was to called to order by Hot Seat Rosslin Rosen ACB, CL at 7.25 pm. The attendance was 18 members and 2 guests - Darmaliah (guest of TM Agnes) and Suhaili ( guest of Hj Yalah Munur ACS, CL)

TME Vera Yap ACG, CL warmed up some members with questions relating to tropical fruits at first. She later lead us to laugh for 2 mins for health reason. I then realized laughing at nothing was not an easy job..... HaHaHaHa.......... TME was so sporting and energetic that she performed a 2-sec "Moulin Rouge" Can Can show - flipping her pareo.

Grammarian - IPP Lynda Lee ACB, CL aptly introduced "Scorch" as the word of the evening.

Bernard Lee ATM-B was at the AH Counter to spot the AHs and UMs whereas TM Liew Hon Min was keeping the time record.

Chartered President, Patricia Chai ATM-B, CL as the Table Topics Master only managed to get half of the members to participate the table topics set by her. Most members couldn't catch the topic that Table Topics Master had to repeat it a few times. Rosslin Rosen ACB, CL coyly commented table topics were a little scorching on a relaxing tropical evening.

There were 4 interesting manual speeches. All the speeches were informative and educational especially TM Dr Renuka's speech on nose cancer.

3. Hj Yalah Munur ACG 7 - If love is blind
4. TM Dr Renuka CC 7 - NPC ( Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma)

TM Agnes Gervasius took up Humor Master for the first time to tickle members' funny bones which I think she has successfully accomplished her mission.

General Evaluator - Eleanor Pang ACG presented Bali souvenirs to show her appreciation to all her role players. She eloquently summarized the meeting with thoughtful and helpful evaluation. She even praised and quoted TM Laura's request for Table Topics Master to throw the topic to all the members instead of fixing a topic for a member.

Meeting ended at 10.00 pm.

Birthday Bash - By The President

Dear Fellow Toastmasters,

Today I am so delighted to be back in Tawau from Magical Bali Convention. My apologies for the delayed report of our last training meeting.

The Birthday Bash training meeting was held on 8th Nov. with 5 November babies - TM Liew Hon Min, TM Renuka, TM Donysiew Julian, Bernard Lee ATM-B and Grace Yong ACG. Unfortunately, TM Liew
Hon Min was unable to celebrate his birthday with the members whereas Bernard Lee ATM-B joined in at the second half of the meeting.

The meeting was called to order by Sergeant-at-Arms Vera Yap ACG,CL at 7.30pm.

TM Donysiew Julian was the invocator to lead the 3 toasts and he followed by a thought of the evening.

Our Toastmaster of The Evening - Immediate Past President, Lynda Lee ACB, CL warmed up the meeting with brain teasers. We were divided into 3 groups lead by November babies - TM Donysiew Julian, TM Vincent Chong and Grace Yong ACG. The brain teasers had really put a test on our general knowledge. It was cute to hear Rosslin Rosen ACB, CLcomplaining her slow reaction to answer the quiz. Lynda, you had done a good job as TME.

TM Agnes Gervasius-Tamin took the role as Grammarian for the first time. She introduced " DISCERN" as the word of the evening.

Hj Yalah Munur ACG, CL as the perfect Timer (of course, he is not a 2-Timer) and TM Laura Simon as AH Counter was good at catching UMs and AHs .

First timer Table Topics Master - TM Renuka dressed in a blouse and a skirt to conduct the "Musical Chair Table Topics" which means who didn't get a seat got to draw a birthday related question to answer. The session was a break through though quite lengthy but it was allowed in order to suit the theme "Birthday Bash" Our guest, Fiona won the prize from TM Renuka for getting to sit the last chair.

Table Topics Evaluator - DTM Lee Chye Ewe congratulated on TM Renuka's courage to try new things. He complimented the Musical Chair Table Topics session was an adventurous attempt. "BRAVO" to TM Renuka for being so innovative.

There were 3 manual speeches:

1. TM Vincent Chong - The mind of a 40-yr old boy CC 2
2. TM Thompson Rayner - Increase your memory power CC 3
3. DTM Lee Chye Ewe - Speaking off the cuff ACB 6

General Evaluator - Rosslin Rosen gave a thorough account of the meeting but she got TM Vincent Chong's name mixed up with David Chong's during her speech evaluation. David, you were always on our mind!!!

My sincere thanks for the following sponsors - Grace Yong ACG for sponsoring the food, TM Liew Hon Min for sponsoring the birthday cake and Lynda Lee ACB, CL for sponsoring the party hats. Yeah, food was too yummy that TME was about to hibernate at the second half of the meeting.....Ha..Ha...

At the end of the meeting, Wilfred Lim announced he would join as member of Tawau TMC ........... Woohooooo ...........

Happy Birthday

Riding high on the recent themed meetings, meeting on 8th November 2011 was themed as "Birthday Bash" to celebrated the birthdays of Grace Yong, Bernard Lee, Renuka, Donysiew and Liew Hon Min. It was originally suggested as Birthday Suit but changed later just in case some members are not creative enough :-)

Anyway the meeting turned out to be a big party with everyone putting up party hats and balloons were everywhere. Lynda Lee got all the gadgets ready, sponsored by Renuka. Lynda was Toastmaster of The Evening. Her warming up session was rather challenging especially if we have not paid attention to general knowledge.

Training Meeting on 25th Oct. 2011 was Tawau TMC members celebrating Deepavali - The Festival of Lights that lights triumphs over darkness and good over evil.

The evening started off at 7.15 pm with a scrumptious dinner - courtesy of TM Renuka and her husband, Rajadurai. This was our first experience at Toastmasters meeting that we were seated and being served dinner - TM Renuka and Rajadurai served us personally. TM Dr Arun was kind enough to lend a helping hand to serve as well. We really appreciate the warm hospitality they have showered us.

Toastmasters of the Evening, Grace Yong ACG controlled the proceeding of the meeting gracefully as always. She warmed up the meeting by asking us to form an adjective of each letter from the word "DEEPAVALI" It was very interesting.

APTITUDE was introduced as the word of the evening by Grammarian Patricia Chai ATM-B, CL. Her hand gesture to encourage members to use the word of the day was like an "ORDER"

Bernard Lee ATM-B as Table Topics Master managed to get only 11 members to speak during the table topics session. Bernard, your voice is too soft to be heard. My recommendation to you is to join TM Laura
Simon in "singing your heart out" to practice your vocal variety.

Colorful costumes, Indian Music, Indian Cuisine and Decorations of the hall generated a festive ambiance that created a memorable evening. It was the most outstanding training meeting we've had attended so far.
With 21 members and 4 guests, I reckoned it was a very successful meeting although it was a bit lenghty.

In the spirit of Toastmasters we arrived in Sandakan through various means. President Datin Betty sacrificed part of her holidays and flew in many long hours all the way from Paris. Our only representative in the speech contest, Patricia Chai, flew in from Tawau while another 8 members took 5 hours to drive to Sandakan. Eleanor also drove in later.

Being a convention organiser before we understand well that Sandakan Toastmasters Club, Sandakan Mandarin Toastmasters Club and Sandakan Pidato Toastmasters Club who are the organisers of this convention need all the support from clubs all over Division K. That was the reason why we tried our best to send as many delegates as possible to the convention.

Delegates to Division K 16th Semi-Annual Convention, clock wise Liew Hon Min, Donysiew Julian, Rosslin Peter Rosen, Lynda Lee Ping, Bernard Lee, Grace Yong, Lee Chye Ewe, Elizabeth Goh, Eleanor Pang, Patricia Chai and President Datin Betty Hiew.

In support of Division K 16th Semi-Annual Convention jointly organised by Sandakan Toastmasters Club and Sandakan Pidato Toastmasters Club on 15th and 16th October 2011, Tawau Toastmasters Club is sending 11 members lead by its President Datin Betty Hiew.

Being one of the Clubs away from Kota Kinabalu where most of the Division K clubs are situated, we understand fully that organising a Divisional convention is not easy. The most challenging part would be to get enough delegates for the convention.

While invited speakers from far, from other divisions or even other districts have always willingly giving their fullest support despite having to take more than one flight to arrive at the convention venue, some clubs within the Division itself are reluctant to show their support. This is certainly an area which all of us should ponder upon and work harder to improve.

In the spirit of Toastmasters where we learn, improve and excel through mutual support and encouragement, we are gathering as many members as possible to give our support to the organisers. So here we are, Sandakan Here We Come!

Theme meetings are getting more and more popular these days. The meeting on 11th October 2011 was yet another interesting and fun filled theme meeting, Striking Stripes. Everyone came in their stripes attire without exception.

There were many first timer role players at the meeting as well. They were:

Tawau Toastmasters Club wishes to congratulates its charter member and Past President Victor Raja for being conferred the Datukship by The State Governor in conjunction with his birthday. Congratulations Datuk Victor Raja.

Datuk Victor Raja has served the club in various capacities and one who has also attended the meetings with his overhead projector during those days when computer and LCD projector were rare. He was also the one who helped to charter Tawau Mandarin Toastmasters Club.

Datuk Victor Raja was Club President from 2001 to 2002 with his Presidential Theme: Pursuit For Excellence. He was Area K2 Governor from 2003 to 2004 and later moved on to be the Division K Assistance Division Governor Marketing.

Besides Toastmasters he is also members of many Non-Governmental Organisations in particularly the Lions Club. He is currently serving as the Tawau Hospice Association President.

Datuk Victor Raja is one individual who has always put social services above the interests of his own. This recognition of his long term service is definitely one which we are all very proud of.

There were 4 guests - Wilfred Lim from SDK Toastmasters Club, Mirna ( Laura's friend) Florrie ( Donysiew's cousin) and Dr Arun.

Nasarudin introduced himself cutely by breaking the good news to us that his wife is pregnant again. The meeting room was roared with laughter. Nash, you are a hard working bee.... Congratulations to you!

Dr Arun came to know about our club through the news of our installation and speech contests published on local papers. He then surfed the club's website to check on the information and activities of our club. He signed up as member the following evening. Welcome to Tawau Toastmasters Club, Dr Arun.

Besides, Area Governor Hatta Yunus was also present at this meeting. It was his official club visit. He gave us an animated and entertaining training on " Speak With Your Body Language". Though training was done in Bahasa Malaysia, I am sure all members and guests were fully entertained.

General Evaluator DTM Lee Chye Ewe gave a thorough evaluations of the entire meeting. He praised Grammarian Vera Yap ACG, CL for the well- prepared full account of the usage of the word "BLACK". He also praised guests who took part in the Table Topics session and speakers for sharing their personal stories.

Due to miscommunication with Eddy (venue caretaker) last Saturday, the meeting hall was taken and occupied by others. Although we were very upset as we were arranged to a smaller meeting room but I would say we really had an enjoyable meeting despite the unexpected.The meeting was vibrant and every one of us was filled with the enthusiasm to speak.

The room might be small but we have room for everyone.

Area K2 Speech Contests Winners

Toastmasters Club members from Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Tawau gathered in Tawau on 24th September 2011 to compete in the Area K2 Evaluation and Humorous Speech Contests.

Patricia Chai from Tawau Toastmasters Club won the Humorous Speech Contest while Ling How Kee from Sandakan Toastmasters Club won the Speech Evaluation Contests.

Meanwhile Dr Renukan Nambiar from the newly chartered Lahad Datu Toastmasters Club won the second place for the Humorous Speech.

Rosslin Peter Rosen and Liew Hon Min, both from Tawau Toastmasters Club won second and third place respectively in the Speech Evaluation Contests.

Winning trophies and certificates were presented by Area Governor Hatta Yunus @ Sawabi. Hatta is a member of Sandakan Pidato Toastmasters Club.

Also present were Toastmasters International District 87 Lieutenant Governor Marketing Datin Grace Chiu, Area K5 Governor Fong Kim Sang, members of Tawau Mandarin Toastmasters Club and other supporters.

The Champions for both contests will compete in the Division Level contests schedule to be held on 16th October 2011 in Sandakan. They will be joined by representatives from other parts of Sabah as well as Labuan and Brunei Darussalam.

Lee Le Min from Tawau Mandarin Toastmasters Club was the Test Speaker where his speech was evaluated by the Speech Evaluation Contestants. Lee Le Min also recently won both his Club's Evaluation and Humorous Speech Contest.

1. Why did you join Toastmasters?

I was agoraphobic and suffered from depression. I knew Toastmasters would help me. I had my husband literally drag me to my first meeting.

2. How long have you been a member? I just celebrated my 12th anniversary.

3. Which clubs do you belong to and what do you like about them? I am a member of three Toastmasters clubs. Ocotillo Breakfast Club in Chandler, Arizona, is an up-and-coming club with wonderful members. At Leaders Plus club in Mesa, Arizona, I love rubbing shoulders with the leaders I emulate. Blue Toastmasters in Chandler, Arizona, is an unorthodox club and just so much fun!

4. What do you do for a living? I am a full-time mom and webmaster.

5. How have your communication and leadership skills grown since joining Toastmasters? I could barely leave the house 12 years ago, and now I am a confident speaker and leader. I never could have imagined myself in a leadership position; now I just completed my term as division governor! I learned so much in that role.

6. How have these skills benefited you personally and professionally? I have been cured of my depression and agoraphobia and I have gained the confidence to start my own business, all while nurturing friendships that I know will last a lifetime.

7. What are your goals in Toastmasters? Continuous personal growth — and I want to help my district grow by serving as club extension chair.

8. What is your favorite thing about Toastmasters? Easy––the people. There is no better place to find great friends. Toastmasters are people interested in personal growth for themselves and others, and they know how to say things—even challenging things—in a way that is encouraging. What more could you ask for from your friends?

9. What surprised you most about Toastmasters? How life-changing it has been for me.

10. What’s next for you in Toastmasters? I’m working on my second DTM, which I want to achieve—this time around—in less than 11 years.

Lahad Datu Toastmasters Club Inaugural Installation

In support of the newest club in Area K2, Lahad Datu Toastmasters Club, 4 members of the Club attended its Inaugural Installation on 14th September 2011. President Datin Betty was accompanied by Eleanor Pang, Rosslin Rosen and Lee Chye Ewe for the trip.

It is also in the support of our own member David Chong who has initiated the formation of a Toastmasters Club in Lahad Datu way back in 2008. With the help of members from Sandakan and Tawau the club was finally chartered on 31st May 2011.

As the function was attended by both members and guests, it was held slightly different from an ordinary installation practiced by other clubs. Besides the formal installation of club officers, there were also demonstration speech and Table Topics session.

Area K2 Governor Hatta Sawabi installed the newly elected club officer where Dr Renuka is the President. Guest of Honour was Datin Grace Chiu, the current District 87 Lieutenant Governor Marketing. She is also one of the club mentors. Datin Grace also presented the District 87 Star pins to the club officers on behalf of Immediate Past District Governor Mohamad Ariff Azahari who was unable to attend.

Lee Chye Ewe was invited to conduct a Table Topics session. He has managed to invite guests who were afraid to speak to come forward and speak for a minute of two. He even conducted the session in English and Bahasa Malaysia so as to encourage guests to speak.

From The President

Dear Fellow Toastmasters,

It was suggested and adopted at the 1st EXCO meeting held on 4th August 2011 that club president is to make a report after each training meeting. The report is done in the interest of members who were absent from the meeting would get to know the happenings in the club.

So, it is my pleasure to report to you all that training meeting held on 13th Sept was a 3-in-1 ( Merdeka, Hari Raya & Mooncake Festival) celebration meeting. It was a fabulous evening with altogether 21 members and guests attended. What a big attendance so far!

Our ever supportive member, Martha Chiew from New York was among the guests. She surprised us with her homemade sushi. Zuraini, one of our active new members brought us Hari Raya cookies and tasty prawn
crackers. Nancy Chua who was absent for a few months, finally came back to the meeting with mooncakes specially made by her daughter. She was accompanied by her son, Vincent Chong whom has been our guest for a few times.

2 new members - Thompson Rayner and Laura Simon Gansing were inducted that very evening. I reminded and refreshed members (old and new) that Toastmasters are guided by the Toastmasters Promise and also are guided by the 4 core values - Integrity, Dedication to Excellence, Service to members and Respect the individuals.

Cheeky Patricia Chai was Toastmaster of the Evening, testing our listening skills in order to warm us up at the start of the meeting. Elizabeth Goh as Table Topics Master conducted an interesting session with various topics regarding the old times and the present.

For manual speeches, DTM Lee Chye Ewe did his 2nd round ACB on project no. 4 and Zuraini did her CC project no. 4.

Thompson and Vera are September babies. For a change, Vera ordered donuts instead of a cake to celebrate the birthdays.

I am so delighted that 2 guests - Agnes Gervas Us-Tamin ( Rosslin's friend) and Vincent Chong ( Nancy Chua's son) confirmed to join as members.

Other activities:
1. Fellowship gathering at my residence on 31st August was successfully organized with 9 members and 6 guests attended. It was very nice that Quek Jia Hung's dad came over to my house to say hello to all of us.
2. I attended the 5 clubs joint meeting hosted by SDK Pidato Club which was held on 10th Sept.
3. DTM Lee Chye Ewe, Rosslin Rosen, Eleanor Pang and myself attended Lahad Datu inaugural installation last night (14th Sept.) We stayed overnight in Lahad Datu. We were back to Tawau today at 12.30 noon.

I guessed that's all I could report for the moment. I am looking forward to seeing you all on 27th Sept.

The meeting on 13th September 2011 was initially planned to be a 3 in 1 celebration for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Merdeka and Moon Cake Festival. However it turned out to have celebrated more than that.

As expected with Grace Yong's creativity and commitment, the hall was decorated beautifully with Malaysia flags, Ketupat and lanterns. Grace was also presented with the Club's Creativity Award for her contributions and creativity displayed all these years. The announcement was made by Lee Chye Ewe who was also presenting his manual speech. This ceremony added up to the celebration.

Patricia Chai was Toastmaster of The Evening who warmed up the audience with her little trick, Nose, Nose, Nose. Elizabeth Goh who was recently upgraded to the status of grandmother was the Table Topics Master. Vera Yap was the General Evaluator.

1. The Area K2 Evaluation and Humorous Speech Contests will be held in Tawau on 24th September 2011. Elizabeth Goh has been appointed the Contest Organiser. Tawau Toastmasters Club will be represented by Patricia Chai, Liew Hon Min and Rosslin Rosen.

2. Division K 16th Semi-Annual Convention will be held in Sandakan on 15th & 16th October 2011. Members are encouraged to participate. So far the President, Patricia Chai, Liew Hon Min, Bernard Lee, Lee Chye Ewe and Grace Yong have signed up.

3. The family gathering on 31st August 2011 was a success. However the President hopes members would take the opportunity to make manual speeches.

4. An Area K2 5 clubs joint-meeting was held in SMK Sandakan organised by Area K2 Governor on 10th September 2011. Tawau Toastmasters Club was represented by President Datin Betty.

5. 4 members of the club will attend Lahad Datu Toastmasters Club inaugural installation on 14th September 2011.

KUCHING: People’s Progressive Party (PPP) state chairman John Lau has been elected as the International President Elect in the Toastmaster International’s (TI) Board of Directors for the 2011-12 term.

Lau, who is a member of the Kuching Connections Toastmasters Club and Kuching Mandarin Toastmasters Club, was the first vice-president in the previous term.

Prior to being elected as the vice-president, Lau has served many distinguished positions in the region, including being International Director for two years from 2005.

He joined Toastmasters in September 1990 and since then he has achieved 10 times Distinguished Toastmaster that is the highest award in TI that a member can achieve.

Lau is to assume the post of Toastmasters International President 2012-2013 in August 2012.
The other members of the board of directors are International President Michael Notaro from US, First Vice-President George Yen (Taiwan) and Second Vice-President Mohammad Murad (Dubai).

The immediate Past International President is Pat Johnson from Victoria, British Columbia.

For the first time in the history of TI that members of its executive committee are made up of leaders from different countries.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif., Aug. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In a speech underscoring the value of close connections with family and friends, Jock Elliott, a Toastmaster from Bongaree, Queensland, Australia, won the final round of the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking on Saturday, Aug. 20. Elliott, along with eight other final contestants, reached the championship round after several eliminating rounds that began six months ago with 30,000 participants from 116 countries.

"We often don't look after the people who really matter in our lives the way we need to," Elliott said. His speech resonated with a capacity crowd of nearly 2,000 listeners from around the world who attended the contest held at the Bally's Las Vegas Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. A veteran competitor, Elliott joined Toastmasters 36 years ago and competed in nearly 380 Toastmasters speech contests before reaching his lifelong goal of earning the title of World Champion of Public Speaking. In his acceptance speech, he said, "Thank you for more than a lifetime of challenge, opportunity and friendship." A six-time World Champion finalist, Elliott said if he had won this award five or 20 years ago, "I might have been a richer speaker but not a better speaker."

A speech coach by trade, Elliott offers the following advice: "A good speech is like a good book or a good song. It's memorable and creates an emotional connection."

Speakers delivered five- to seven-minute speeches on wide-ranging topics, and were judged on content, organization and delivery.

Elliott claimed the title of 2011 World Champion of Public Speaking during the Toastmasters International Convention, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., Aug. 17-20.

Second- and third-place winners in the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking were Kwong Yue Yang of Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, with his speech, "Fortune Cookie," and Scott Pritchard of Las Vegas, Nevada, with his speech titled "Roscoe's Words."

Lahad Datu Toastmasters Club Meeting

We have always wanted to do something where one of our Club members did it for many times. David Chong used to travel 220km to and fro Tawau - Semporna to attend Tawau Toastmasters Club meeting. That was when he was working in Semporna.

When he was transferred to Sukau he travelled further to attend Sandakan Toastmasters Club meetings in Sandakan. When he landed in Sugut he travelled 7 hours one way to be with Tawau Toastmasters Club. We believe no one has ever done that for Toastmasters and we are certainly proud that the one and only one who did it, David Chong, was and still a member of Tawau Toastmasters Club.

When the idea of forming a Toastmasters Club in Lahad Datu for a second time came out, Datin Grace Chiu, current District 87 Lieutenant Governor Marketing and then Area K2 Governor managed to gather some members and guests for a demonstration meeting, of course with the help of David Chong who is from Lahad Datu. The demonstration meeting was held in one of the hotels on 28th September 2008 (http://tmtawau.blogspot.com/2008/09/formation-of-lahad-datu-speakers-club.html). Sandakan Toastmasters Club and Tawau Toastmasters Club were the prime movers with members from both clubs at the demonstration meeting.

The Protem committee formed on 28th September 2008.

A protem committee was set up and the proposed name was Lahad Datu Speakers Club. There was previously a Lahad Datu Toastmasters Club and a Lahad Datu Mandarin Toastmasters Club but both have since disappeared from the Toastmasters International list. Hence the name Lahad Datu Speakers Club was chosen.

The club managed to conduct a few meetings and aggressively recruiting members. However the struggle was halted when some members were transferred out due to job commitments. The formation of the club cooled down.

It was in 2009 that Dr Renuka Nambiar wrote to Toastmasters International on her intention to form a Toastmasters Club in Lahad Datu. The email was redirected to the then District 51 Governor Ritchie Chong and the information was conveyed to Datin Grace who was then the District's Mentoring Chair. The hope of a club in Lahad Datu was rekindled.

The effort intensified when Norman Chin was the Area K2 Governor and Lahad Datu Toastmasters Club was chartered on 31th May 2011 (http://tmdvk.blogspot.com/p/clubs-2.html).

As a new club, she needs all the supports from all the Clubs not only in Area K2 but also Division K.

Tawau Toastmasters Club members have always wanted to lend Lahad Datu Toastmasters Club the support by at least attending their training meeting. Under the leadership of President Datin Betty Hiew, with 3 other members of the Club, Grace Yong, Bernard Lee and Lee Chye Ewe, we attended their meeting on 10th August 2011, almost 3 years since the first formation initiative.

We also experienced what David Chong has been doing, traveled 360km to and fro Lahad Datu - Tawau. We left Tawau at 3.30pm and back safely in Tawau before midnight.

It was certainly a wonderful experience and the wonderful feelings were compounded by the overwhelming attendance at the meeting. There were about 30 members and guests attended the meeting.

Dorenda who once drove all the way from Lahad Datu with her son to attend Tawau Toastmasters Club speech contests is currently Lahad Datu Toastmasters Club Vice President Education and was also the Toastmaster of The Evening during the meeting. David Chong was humble enough to take up the post of Vice President Public Relations.He was the Humour Master during the meeting.

Members of Tawau Toastmasters Club also took turn to introduce and promote the Toastmasters besides taking up meeting roles. Bernard Lee was the Table Topics Master, Grace Yong Ah Counter, Datin Betty Language Evaluator and Lee Chye Ewe General Evaluator. Lee Chye Ewe also presented a speech on Roating - The Big Man.

Yes, 5 interesting ways to demonstrate your love for your wife, that was what Nasarudin shared in his third speech during meeting on 9th August 2011. The 5 ways are:

1. Give her time
2. Give her surprise
3. Kiss her at least 6 seconds a day
4. Take a shower with her
5. Don't argue over money matters

His speech which was delivered in relaxing and humorous way attract every attention from both men and women in the meeting including young guest Quek Jia Hung, he is over 18 anyway. Women were also advised to pray on so that the 5 ways will continuously coming their way.

That was part of the highlight for the meeting. Two other speeches were also delivered by two more men! Thompson made his ice breaker speech giving the opportunity for members to get to know him better. Now we may call him Thompson, Tomtom, Son or even Jerry as Jerry is a friend of Tom in Tom and Jerry cartoon series!

The third speaker being Lee Chye Ewe who did his second round of Advance speeches, Speaking In Praise. He was praising Past President Rosslin Peter Rosslin who was his mentor.

Earlier on President Datin Betty reminded members to volunteer to take up meeting roles. She also emphasised on the importance of acknowledging email and SMS. It would make the job of the sender much easier.

The happiest person during the meeting was non other than Lucy Lo as the club also celebrated her birthday. She came in her new dress and new hairdo. Her birthday cake which made many salivating was sponsored by the President.

On Wednesday, August 3, 2011, Toastmasters International will announce an upcoming dues increase. The following message will be sent to all members:

Dear Toastmaster member,

As directed by policy, the Board of Directors periodically reviews membership dues to ensure that the organization can satisfy member needs while continuously enhancing their experience and the services and programs provided. After a review of the organization's five-year financial forecast of activities compared with forecasted revenue, the Board has voted to increase membership dues.

As a result, on October 1, 2011 Toastmasters' annual membership dues will increase from $54 (U.S. dollars) to $72 (U.S. dollars), payable in increments of $36 (U.S. dollars) every six months.

Several factors drive this increase:

Member needs are greater than ever.
Since 1995, membership has grown nearly 55%, from 169,330 members in 1995 to 262,000 in 2010. In this same period, annual dues increased only once in 2005 from $36 (U.S. dollars) to $54 (U.S. dollars).
Toastmasters has passed the economy of scale established a decade ago; its support services must expand in order to better serve its ever-expanding member base.

The increased funding will be used to enhance member support and services, and enable the implementation of the five-year Strategic Plan that was developed by the Board of Directors in 2010.

On October 1, 2011, Toastmasters International membership dues will be US $72, payable in increments of US $36 every six months. This is equivalent to US $6 per month.

Q: Why are we having a dues increase?

A: In 2007, the membership voted to give authority to the Board of Directors to determine the amount of dues each member is to pay. The Board of Directors reviews the membership dues every two-three years to ensure that the organization can continue to satisfy the needs of the members while continuously enhancing their experience and the services and programs provided.

Q: Is Toastmasters membership a good value?

A: As you consider the dues increase, think for a moment about seminars, conferences, and college or university classes that cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars. Toastmasters, at US $72 per year provides education and invaluable practical experience, support and reinforcement. Toastmasters is the best value for anyone seeking communication and leadership training.

Q: Should Toastmasters reduce the products and services provided to members and clubs to save money?

A: Members and prospective members are well educated, discerning and have high expectations. They expect up-to-date, high-quality products and services to help them improve their communication and leadership skills. Offering fewer or outdated products and services will not meet the expectations of our members and clubs, will discourage current members from continuing their membership, and deter others from joining. New and improved products, programs and services will better support each member's experience as well as overall membership growth and retention.

Q: Can the organization obtain the needed funds from other sources?

A: Toastmasters have several sources of revenue in addition to membership dues. The largest is sales of products such as educational materials, recognition items, books, and other club and member supplies. Toastmasters offers these materials to all members and clubs around the world. Revenue from this source helps lengthen the interval between dues increases.

Q: When was the last dues increase and how much was it?

A: The last dues increase was in October 2005, rising from US $36 to US $54 per year. The increase was projected to carry the organization through another three to five years. It has now been six years since the last dues increase.

Q: What will be the financial impact for districts?

A: Districts will receive additional funds, which are used to support the district mission of helping clubs meet their members' needs, training club officers, organizing new clubs and promoting membership growth within the clubs in the district.

Q: Has Toastmasters considered reducing the funds provided to districts?

A: Reducing the funds districts receive would not be beneficial to clubs and to the organization as a whole. Districts provide much-needed support to clubs, helping them to function better and achieve the club mission. They train club officers and provide other educational programs to help members improve their speaking and leadership skills. Districts also are responsible for building new clubs and attracting new members to existing clubs.

Q: Will the online system show the new dues amount?

A: Yes. Starting September 1, 2011, club officers will be able to add new members with October begin dates and pay renewals for the October through March period online with the correct dues amount.

Q: Where do we find updated new member applications?

A: Updated new member applications will be available for download from the Toastmasters International website by September 1, 2011.

Q: My club has not yet submitted applications for members who joined prior to October 1, 2011. What do we do to avoid paying the increased dues for retroactive payments?

A: Club officers can still submit new member applications with join dates prior to October 1, 2011. The new member fee and the dues will be at the previous rate. However, the renewal payment beginning October 1, 2011 will be at the new rate.

Q: If I use a previous version of an application, will it be accepted and processed?

A: Since we will have a new application online onSeptember 1 we ask that you use the new form. However, if you use a previous version of the application, we ask that you mark and submit the correct dues amount. If an application with the old dues amount is received, it will be processed, but the club will be billed the difference, which is payable within 30 days. Of course, for fastest service submit members online.

Q: My club forgot to submit a new member who joined prior to October 1. What do we do?

A: You can still add the member online or send in a membership application with a join date prior to October 1. The dues will be at the previous rate. The renewal payment for October - March will be at the new rate.

Q: My club paid dues for both the April 2011 and October 2011 periods in April. What do we do?

A: Your club will be billed for the additional amount due for the October 2011 period, i.e., $9 per person.

Q: What will the dues be for new clubs that charter by September 30, 2011?

A: Members of new clubs that charter by September 30 will pay six months dues in advance at the old rate of US $27. The subsequent pro-rate paid by those members will be at the new rate of $6 per month.

Q: Do we need to change our club bylaws? If so, how?

A: Article III of the Club Bylaws requires that clubs indicate the amount of dues and fees they collect from their members. Depending on how much your club currently charges members (international dues plus club dues), it may be necessary to change your club's bylaws. Please remember that a two-thirds favorable vote of the club's active membership is required to change club bylaws.

Any active club officer can make changes to their club's bylaws simply by logging in to www.toastmasters.org/login. Officers will log on with their personal user name and password.

Q: What about un-districted clubs?

A: In some parts of the world, clubs are not assigned to districts. Members of these clubs will pay US $54 per year, payable in increments of US $27 every six months. This is equivalent to US $4.50 per month.

Congratulations! Your club has earned the Select Distinguished Club award for its achievements in the 2010-2011 Toastmasters International Distinguished Club Program.

We appreciate the tremendous effort your club made to achieve this award. Club officers and members worked closely as a team to meet Distinguished Club Program goals. Officers organized and conducted exciting club meetings, made sure all members had plenty of speaking and leadership opportunities and promoted membership growth. Members, in turn, prepared carefully for meeting assignments, earned educational awards and invited friends, relatives and co-workers to meetings to help build membership. Because of everyone's efforts, the club achieved the Toastmasters club mission.

First Timer Toastmaster of The Evening Lim Ko Wii themed the meeting on 26th July 2011 -City Hunter. He explained that he has read about it a long time ago and wish to explore the members' opinion on city lives.

The warming up session was conducted by President Datin Betty on special request. She taught everyone 'butting' - a simple dance steps of Bachata. Bachata will be a dance to be introduced in the coming Bali Convention in November. A number of the club members have confirmed their attendance.

Two Toastmasters related activities were held during the last weekend where Tawau Toastmasters Club members were involved.

4 members attended Sandakan Toastmasters Club Installation Banquet on 16th July 2011 in Sandakan. The evening theme was Panama. Almost all the guests were in multiple shapes and colours of hats.

She has challenged the members to bring Tawau Toastmasters Club to President's Distinguished Club with all 10 goals achieved and promised a once a life time reward to all the achievers. Distinguished Guests, my lovely friends, fellow Toastmasters, ladies & gentlemen,

Tonight I couldn't be more happy than to be with you here to celebrate this auspicious day. Thank you for coming to grace our installation and thank you for your support. After tonight, this installation most probably will be forgotten by and by but for me, the memory of this installation will be kept fondly in my heart.

It is indeed a great honor to be able to serve Tawau Toastmasters Club. I will serve with joy, pride and my whole heart. I will serve to the best of my abilities as pledged by me just now. I promise I will give my best to Tawau Toastmasters Club but I am not going to promise anything that is beyond my control. I will not promise Tawau Toastmasters Club will earn President's Distinguished Club status or will excel with flying colors.

A club's success depends very much on members' progress. So, don't ask what the club president can do for the club, ask yourself what you can do for your club. With members' commitment, self-motivation, cooperation, high spirit and enthusiasm, I am sure everything will fall in place. I hope my Executive Committee members and members of the club would cooperate with me to work together harmoniously as a team to achieve our goals for Tawau Toastmasters Club. I always believe team spirit is the heart & soul of the club.

Before I was a Toastmaster, I had attended Tawau Toastmasters Club meetings and functions quite a number of times. All my good friends like Fatimah, Vera and Luna are Toastmasters way before me. For years they had persuaded me to join Toastmasters but I declined.

It was at one meeting I attended - still as a guest - that Elizabeth Goh sat next to me whispering some encouragement words to me. I think she must have casted a strong spell on me. Finally I joined in March 2007 - after 10 long years. To be frank, I joined for the fellowship and of course for self improvement. I can tell you honestly I hate making speeches because I am a nervy. But as time goes by and little did I know, Tawau Toastmasters Club and its senior members had nurtured me to be a leader. And now Shining With Confidence, I am now standing before you as the newly installed club president speaking to you from my heart. I am so thankful to Toastmasters for bringing me into the wonders of public speaking and the wonders of modern technology.
